Evening primrose: a plant between tradition and the evidence

When yellow flowers unfurl within minutes on a warm summer evening, releasing a heavy, sweet scent, the plant behind it usually turns out to come from a different continent altogether than most people would guess.

How the evening primrose made its way from North America to Europe

Common evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) belongs to the willowherb family (Onagraceae) and originates in North America. Around 1620 it reached Europe by sea, initially as an ornamental for botanical gardens and estate grounds. Because it self-seeds readily and tolerates dry, sandy, nutrient-poor soils, it had already gone wild across much of Central Europe by the 17th and 18th centuries. Botanically, it is now classified as a neophyte — a species originally foreign that has become permanently established through human influence. Because the plant is so widespread today, many people mistakenly assume it is native.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the evening primrose was additionally cultivated as a vegetable and utility crop: its fleshy taproot was considered nutritious and prized in the farm gardens of Central Europe. This dual use — as both ornamental and crop plant — helps explain how quickly Oenothera biennis spread across the continent.

What Indigenous North American communities and European gardeners used the plant for

In North America, use of the evening primrose reaches back considerably further than its European history. Various Indigenous communities processed the oil-rich seeds into a paste applied externally to the skin and minor skin irritations. An infusion made from the flowering shoot tips was also traditionally drunk for digestive complaints. These are documented as traditional, folk-medicine uses — historical context, not evidence of modern-day efficacy.

In Europe, the evening primrose established itself in parallel as a plant with a long tradition in farm gardens. Old sayings praised the strength of its root, and botanical reference works still cite it today as an example of a plant whose use shifted over the centuries — from the kitchen to the ornamental garden and later to the raw-material garden from which the well-known evening primrose seed oil is now obtained.

Why the evening primrose's flowers open within minutes

Botanically, the evening primrose is a biennial herbaceous plant. In its first year it forms only a ground-level rosette of leaves with a sturdy taproot; in its second year it sends up a spiky, branched flower stem up to two metres tall. The genus comprises more than 650 species worldwide, with several closely related microspecies grouped under the collective term Oenothera biennis agg., since a particular genetic mechanism (permanent translocation heterozygosity) makes them barely distinguishable from one another.

Its name refers to a phenomenon found in hardly any other Central European plant: at dusk, the yellow flowers open within a few minutes in a single flowing motion, releasing an intense scent to attract night-flying moths. The scientific genus name Oenothera derives from the Greek word for wine — a nod to the once-assumed wine-like scent of the root.

Today, oil production relies mainly on Oenothera biennis, sometimes supplemented by the closely related Oenothera lamarckiana. Commercial evening primrose seed oil is obtained either through gentle warm-pressing followed by refining, or through cold solvent extraction, in which the solvent is subsequently removed by distillation. The plant is cultivated for this purpose in both Europe and North America, and oil supplies can originate from various countries on both continents.

What research says about the gamma-linolenic acid in its seeds

The seeds of the evening primrose contain a fatty oil with an unusually high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids for a plant seed, including linoleic acid and the rarer gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This composition explains the scientific interest: in the body, GLA is converted into precursors of inflammation-regulating signalling molecules, which is why evening primrose oil has been studied in clinical trials for a range of complaints since the 1980s.

A systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published in 2024 in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies summarises this heterogeneous body of research: results for rheumatoid arthritis were mixed; isolated positive signals were observed for diabetes mellitus, atopic eczema, menopausal hot flushes and mastalgia (breast pain), while no effect could be demonstrated for chronic hand dermatitis, psoriasis, premenstrual syndrome and several other indications. The authors themselves note that study quality is inconsistent and that robust recommendations are not currently possible.

Particularly instructive is the comparison with an earlier Cochrane review (randomised controlled trials, 2013) specifically on atopic eczema: across all included studies, it found no significant benefit of orally taken evening primrose oil over placebo. This discrepancy between individual positive studies and the absence of an effect in the systematic synthesis is a recognised example of how differently evidence can appear depending on the method of evaluation — a point that credible sources state openly rather than smoothing over. An earlier systematic review of controlled trials on premenstrual complaints similarly concluded that no benefit beyond a placebo effect could be demonstrated.

How differently the evidence can look depending on the condition is further illustrated by a 2021 meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health on mastalgia: it evaluated 13 randomised controlled trials with a total of 1,752 participants and found that evening primrose oil produced no measurable difference in pain relief compared with placebo or with comparator treatments such as topical anti-inflammatories or vitamin E. This sits in some tension with the 2024 review cited above, which reports isolated positive signals for the same indication — an example of how strongly conclusions can depend on which studies are included and how they are weighted.

How Europe's medicines regulator classifies the evening primrose

The European Medicines Agency (EMA), through its Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPC), has published an EU herbal monograph on evening primrose seed oil. The classification is notable: it amounts solely to recognition as a traditional herbal medicinal product, based on long-standing use — not a "well-established use" authorisation, which would require clinical evidence of efficacy. The recognised traditional indication is, moreover, narrowly limited to the symptomatic relief of itching in acute and chronic dry skin conditions when taken orally. No regulatory recognition exists for any of the other areas of application examined in research.

What to consider around use, pregnancy and possible interactions

For the traditional oral use, the EU herbal monograph notes the following points:

Anyone considering evening primrose seed oil as a supplement — particularly if taking other medication, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for children — should seek medical or professional advice beforehand. The monograph also recommends consulting a healthcare professional if symptoms persist for more than eight weeks.

Conclusion: a botanically fascinating plant with limited, mixed evidence

Botanically and culturally, the evening primrose is one of Europe's most remarkable neophytes: introduced from North America, gone wild into a familiar roadside dweller, known for its rapid evening bloom, and traditionally used by both Indigenous North American and European communities alike. Research into its characteristic compound, gamma-linolenic acid, is extensive but inconsistent: while individual studies show positive signals, systematic reviews reach differing, sometimes sobering conclusions depending on the condition studied. Europe's medicines regulator accordingly recognises only a narrowly defined traditional use. This mix of botanical fascination and inconsistent clinical evidence makes the evening primrose a good example of how differently tradition and modern research can turn out.
