Adults aren't automatically protected either: a case report documented in 2025 describes a patient who took roughly 130,000 IU of cholecalciferol daily for about 20 months, based on a doctor's unproven assumption that she needed markedly higher doses due to a supposed "vitamin D resistance." Why social media is also becoming a source of risk

Another factor behind such overdoses doesn't come from abroad, but from people's own feeds: on TikTok and Instagram, self-proclaimed health and nutrition gurus regularly recommend high-dose vitamin D products – often paired with their own discount code. An analysis by pharmacologists at Hannover Medical School, which examined around 100 food supplements promoted on Instagram between 2021 and 2023, found that more than two-thirds of the promoted products exceeded the recommended daily doses. A BfR expert cited vitamin D cases in the same context where the recommended maximum daily amount was exceeded by up to 60 times. A separate analysis of Instagram supplement advertising found that 54 percent of the promoted vitamin products exceeded the maximum amount recommended by the BfR, and 7 percent even exceeded EFSA's safe upper limit – without a single one of the posts examined mentioning possible side effects or interactions. The previously mentioned case of the patient taking roughly 130,000 IU daily also shows that even advice with a seemingly medical veneer – here, the unproven theory of "vitamin D resistance" – is no guarantee of scientific grounding. Anyone looking for dosage guidance should therefore always cross-check social media claims against independent, verified sources such as the FSVO, EFSA, or Tox Info Suisse, rather than relying on the recommendations of individual accounts – especially when a discount code or a personal shop is part of the picture.

Why bolus high doses are inherently riskier than a small daily dose

Besides imports from overseas, authorities across Europe are also observing a growing market for so-called bolus products – supplements with very high single doses meant to be taken only every few days to weeks. In 2025, Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment pointed out that studies using single doses of up to 500 micrograms roughly every 20 days can produce blood concentrations that become problematic, particularly for people who are already well supplied. The logic behind this – take it less often, but more at once – sounds practical, but it carries a structural problem: anyone who loses track of when they last took a dose risks doubling up. A daily, low-dose intake is, by contrast, easier to build into a routine and less prone to error.

Where the scientifically defined upper limit sits

The "safe upper intake" of 4,000 IU (100 µg) daily for adults, including pregnant and lactating women, used by Switzerland's FSVO matches the tolerable upper intake level (UL) set by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in 2023. The assessment was based, among other things, on persistent hypercalciuria – elevated urinary calcium excretion, regarded as an early warning sign of excess supply. From randomised controlled trials in humans, the responsible panel derived a lowest observed adverse effect level of 250 micrograms per day; applying a safety factor of 2.5 yields the upper limit of 100 micrograms. An important distinction: this figure marks the point above which health risks become increasingly likely – it is not a target intake.
