Where the name of angelica root comes from – and why it stuck
The story begins with a legend: a hermit is said to have seen an archangel in a dream during the Middle Ages, who showed him a plant offering protection against the plague. Depending on the version, it was Raphael, Gabriel, or Michael – the message stayed the same. This tale is also the source of the scientific name: "Angelica" derives from the Latin "angelicus" (angelic), while "archangelica" means archangel. In German-speaking regions, names such as "Heiliggeistwurz" (Holy Spirit root), "Brustwurz" (chest root), or "Theriakwurz" have also been passed down.
Angelica root originally comes from the far north – the oldest written records of its use are found in Scandinavia, Iceland, and Greenland, where it was known as "Kvan". A meta-analysis (RCT, human) published in 2004 in the journal "Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics" evaluated pooled data from three placebo-controlled trials of a nine-herb combination – including Iberis, chamomile, caraway, liquorice, milk thistle, lemon balm, peppermint, and angelica root – in patients with functional dyspepsia. The result: under the herbal combination, the most bothersome digestive symptom improved significantly more often than under placebo, with comparable tolerability. The specific contribution of angelica root cannot, by nature, be isolated from such a combination study – but the overall picture of the formula speaks to the long bitter-remedy tradition in which the plant is anchored.
What a more recent study has observed regarding angelica root leaves
Beyond digestion, angelica root has more recently also been studied in a quite different area: in 2025, a research team published a triple-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study (RCT, human, 143 participants) on an extract of angelica root leaves in people with overactive bladder. After six weeks, the extract group showed a significant improvement compared with placebo in daytime voids, the storage subscore of the IPSS questionnaire, and quality of life. As this is a pilot study using a leaf extract – a different plant part from the root traditionally used – the results should be viewed as an early, promising signal that warrants further research.
Where angelica root still plays a role today
In Scandinavia and Greenland, young leaves and stems of angelica root traditionally find their way onto the plate – raw in salads, candied as a sweet, or as an aromatic addition to stewed fruit. Seeds and root still provide the characteristic spicy aroma for traditional herbal liqueurs and bitters, a use that can be traced back to medieval monastery recipes. As an ornamental plant with its impressive growth habit, angelica root is also gaining renewed attention in naturalistic gardens.
Safety and use: what to keep in mind with angelica root
The furanocoumarins in angelica root can make skin more sensitive to light. After skin contact with fresh plant sap, or after taking higher-dose preparations, prolonged, intense sun or UV exposure should be avoided, as this can otherwise trigger skin reactions such as redness or burning.
Because angelica root can stimulate gastric acid secretion, its use is not advised for people with existing stomach or intestinal ulcers. Traditional caution applies during pregnancy, as the safety data are insufficient. Professional advice should also be sought before use during breastfeeding or in children.
Anyone taking blood-thinning medication or other photosensitising drugs should discuss concurrent use of angelica root preparations with a doctor or pharmacist beforehand. Larger amounts, especially of the pure essential oil, are not suitable for self-administration and should be reserved for professional use. For unclear or persistent digestive complaints, angelica root is no substitute for medical evaluation.
