Berries: What Their Colour Reveals About Memory and Heart Health

Few fruits conjure summer as instantly as a handful of fresh berries – their colour, their sweetness, the memory of picking them by the roadside. But there's more behind that colour than nostalgia: berries are one of the most extensively studied fruit groups in nutrition research, and what turns up rarely disappoints.

Where berries get their colour – and their reputation as a powerhouse

Blue, purple, deep red: what sets a blueberry apart from a strawberry is mainly a group of plant pigments called anthocyanins. They belong to the large flavonoid family and sit mostly in the skin, where their job in the plant itself is to protect against UV radiation and pests. The darker and more intense the colour, the higher the content tends to be: aronia and elderberries rank among the most anthocyanin-rich fruits of all, followed by blueberry, blackberry, and blackcurrant.

What's notable here: a high anthocyanin density doesn't require an exotic origin. Aronia and elderberry have grown in European gardens and hedgerows for centuries and hold their own against heavily marketed imported "superfood" berries. Blackcurrant, a classic from Swiss and central European gardens, also belongs to the polyphenol-rich varieties.

What a summer full of berries could mean for head and heart

Whether that translates into something noticeable in everyday life is exactly what a research team in the US set out to find. They had a group of 60- to 75-year-olds eat a daily portion of freeze-dried blueberries for three months – roughly the amount in a cup of fresh berries – while a comparison group received an inactive placebo. By the end, the berry group performed noticeably better on a memory test and found it easier to switch between different mental tasks. Balance and gait, however, showed no clear improvement – not every ability responds the same way to the same fruit. Similar findings on memory and vascular function turned up in further controlled studies using wild blueberry extracts in older adults.

Scaled up to the population level, the picture doesn't shrink: according to an analysis of 44 randomised trials and 15 long-term observational studies, people who habitually consume more anthocyanins in everyday life carry an 8 to 26 percent lower risk of cardiovascular mortality, heart attack, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes compared with those with lower intake. A second, independent analysis of 21 intervention studies on anthocyanin-rich berries such as blueberry, cranberry, and blackcurrant also found a noticeable reduction in LDL cholesterol, while the effect on HDL cholesterol varied from study to study.

As a food, berries are considered safe for practically everyone – including pregnant or breastfeeding women and children without known allergies. Only those taking highly concentrated polyphenol extracts as a supplement while also on blood-thinning medication should discuss this with a healthcare professional beforehand, as some studies have observed mild effects on blood clotting.

A lab discovery: what pterostilbene from blueberries does to muscle cells

Sometimes research leads to unexpected places – like the muscle cell of a mouse. A team at Japan's Shinshu University stumbled upon a compound called pterostilbene there in the summer of 2026, a close relative of the better-known resveratrol that likewise occurs in blueberries, grapes, and other berries. The starting point was a simple question: with age, inactivity, and a high-fat diet, fat increasingly accumulates directly within skeletal muscle – a phenomenon experts call myosteatosis, which impairs the body's ability to use sugar and fatty acids efficiently. Since no targeted approaches exist for this yet, the team systematically screened plant-derived food compounds for possible candidates – and found pterostilbene.

In cell culture, the compound reduced fat accumulation by stabilising a protein called PPARδ rather than directly activating it like other known compounds – a mechanism not previously observed in this form. The researchers themselves see it mainly as a starting point for identifying further suitable natural compounds; whether the effect also holds up in a living organism and in humans remains to be studied.

Conclusion: a fruit that has earned its good reputation

Few foods are as well studied as the humble berry: from controlled trials on memory and vascular function, to large population analyses of cardiovascular risk, to fresh lab discoveries about individual berry compounds. What remains open is how much individual berry types differ from one another and which amount makes the biggest difference in everyday life. For a simple handful of berries at breakfast or as a snack, though, those answers aren't really needed – their good reputation already rests on an unusually solid body of evidence.
